The unique prototype leather-based purse made by Hèrmes in 1984 for the late Jane Birkin is up on the market, at Sotheby’s. Now, I’m not normally one to get enthusiastic about designer luggage however after I met Jane Birkin in 2010 (sure, actually), I feel I truly gasped when she produced the eponymous bag, replete with beads, stickers and quite a lot of different equipment. We met fifteen years in the past at Vogue’s Style’s Night time Out in London; Jane Birkin had created a bespoke scent in collaboration with Miller Harris (I’m a fan of Lyn Harris’ newest Perfumer H fragrances). I first ran into Birkin within the Martin Margiela retailer in Mayfair and he or she kindly agreed to let me take her picture (above). The Authentic Jane Birkin Bag has the actor/singer’s initials stamped on the entrance flap; although I couldn’t see them on the time, for all of the beads, ribbons and what-not. I admired how she used equipment to hide and quieten down the eponymous, designer bag.
