I photographed Tupac in 1993, at Smashbox Studios in Culver Metropolis, in L.A. It was for {a magazine}, I overlook which now, tied to the John Singleton film, Poetic Justice, that he was in with Janet Jackson. It was three years earlier than he was shot.
He was very well mannered, very elegant, and open to ideas. He wasn’t like his rap persona. I’m from two worlds, the French bourgeoisie from my father and my mam was a chambermaid all her life, and I used to be raised within the worst hood in France, Clichy-sous-Bois, so in all equity I noticed in my life much more harmful individuals. Plus, as I mentioned, Tupac was very charming. He knew I had quite a lot of respect for him as a human being.

Certain, in spite of everything, it’s present enterprise, the tattoos, the seems to be, however I ended up asking him to put on an Armani go well with, and he agreed.
The one individual I discovered a bit controlling was John Singleton. John was at all times pestering me, “don’t do that, don’t try this,” so after one hour I inform him, “You appear to know what you need, so right here is my digicam. I don’t should be right here.” And Tupac got here up and mentioned, “John, let the person work,” and that was it. I felt he had the soul of a poet, you would really feel it in his eyes. A real artist and a real gentleman.
